OT Month in Cincinnati
OT Month in Cincinnati started out with a great OT advocacy effort. The Cincinnati
District participated in the Mercy Heart Walk for the American Heart Association
and raised over $4,400 dollars for AHA! Team Participation, consisted of Ohio
occupational therapists, students, stroke/heart disease survivors, friends and
family to support and celebrate the event. With the team members’ help
and the generous donations of many, we truly impacted a great cause and supported
OT- all at the same time! During the event Team Participation handed out OT
brochures, buttons, and note pads. We are proud of our turn out and support!
Thank you to all of you who donated, participated and helped out during the
walk- we couldn’t have done it without you! A special thank you to Xavier
University SOTA for their extra effort and Laura Ellis, Public Information Chair,
for her contribution to the effort!
We also plan to retrieve Mayor Mallory’s Proclamation this month supporting April as OT Month!

Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Children in Schools
The 2006 Virginia Scardina Lecture – Presented at the 2007 OOTA Conference
The purpose of this session is to provide up-to-date information on the School Mental Health movement and occupational therapy’s role in addressing the mental health and psychosocial needs of children in schools. Because school resources are shifting to school-wide programs to support social and emotional development and early intervention, all school personnel (teachers, administrators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and related service providers) are called to proactively address the mental health needs of students (Moherek Sopko, 2006; Koller & Bertel, 2006). The integration of knowledge about occupation-based practice, Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL), along with other more traditional occupational therapy approaches (sensory processing, developmental) will be discussed as a way to meet the complex psychosocial and mental health needs of children in schools. With the national emphasis on school-based mental health and the call to provide comprehensive, multifaceted, and integrated intervention approaches, the time is right for occupational therapists to step forward and offer our unique knowledge and skills as one of the relevant providers on the team.
Respectfully Submitted,
