My OT Journey: Trading the Microscope for Meaningful Moments
Kati Garibian, S/OT
During my undergraduate studies, occupational therapy wasn’t even on my radar. I was on a pre-physician assistant track, majoring in medical laboratory science—a field grounded in diagnostics, precision, and behind-the-scenes healthcare. While I appreciated the structure and scientific rigor, something always felt missing. I craved a deeper, more human connection in my work—something more hands-on, relational, and impactful in people’s daily lives. During that time, one of my professors—an inspiring advocate for student engagement—introduced the idea of joining professional organizations. She described them not only as platforms for professional development but as vibrant communities filled with passionate individuals who shared common values. Her words stuck with me. Even before I had fully discovered my path, the idea that such networks could offer mentorship, purpose, and belonging deeply resonated with me. Everything changed once I discovered occupational therapy. The more I learned, the more I realized I had found exactly what I had been searching for—a profession that blended science, creativity, empathy, and advocacy.
One of my first steps in embracing this new professional identity was joining the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA) as a student member. But becoming part of OOTA opened doors I didn’t know existed. From discounted continuing education to real-time policy updates and networking events. I quickly realized that this is more than just a membership—it is a movement. I began attending state conferences, engaging in conversations on legislative priorities, and following advocacy efforts related to access to care, copay fairness, and inclusive practice models. With every opportunity, I felt more connected to something greater than myself. As my involvement grew, I was honored to be appointed as OOTA’s Social Media/Public Information Chair. This role allowed me to leverage my communication skills to elevate the voices of practitioners and students across the state. My team curated content that celebrated professional achievements, promoted educational opportunities, and spotlighted advocacy initiatives. It was rewarding to help foster community through storytelling and visual outreach, while making our mission more accessible and engaging.
As I prepare to assume a new leadership role as the incoming Student Committee Chair, I’m reflect on my excitement to serve as a liaison between OT and OTA students statewide, amplifying their voices, building stronger peer networks, and ensuring developing professionals feel seen, heard, and supported to lead, learn, and advocate alongside the experienced practitioners of OOTA. My journey from a medical laboratory science student to a leader within OOTA has been anything but linear, but it’s a path I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve found a profession that reflects my core values and a professional association that champions growth, inclusion, and collaboration. I remain grateful to that undergraduate professor who encouraged me to look beyond the classroom and embrace the power of community. I am committed to continuing my work alongside OOTA to support the OT profession, elevate student leaders, and strengthen our collective voice. Because when we show up for one another, we all move forward together.
