OOTA Statehouse Day 2025: A Day of Advocacy and Connection

On May 7th, 2025, the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA) hosted an impactful and energizing Statehouse Day at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus. The event brought together a vibrant mix of occupational therapy practitioners, students, advocates, and even supporters from outside the profession advocating for the profession’s crucial role in improving the health and well-being of Ohioans. The mix of seasoned advocates and first-time participants highlighted just how essential occupational therapy has become in Ohio’s healthcare system and reinforced the importance of continued advocacy at the legislative level.
A Day of Advocacy and Impact
Throughout the day, attendees had the invaluable opportunity to meet with their district representatives and discuss key issues impacting the profession. Advocacy efforts included Medicaid funding, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, social and emotional learning in schools, funding for traumatic brain injury (TBI) programs, and other legislation critical to OT’s role in healthcare and education. OOTA’s dedicated lobbyist, Danny Hurley, played a key role in the success of the event. Hurley ensured that each attendee was scheduled for a personal meeting with their district representative, creating an opportunity for advocates to connect with lawmakers and emphasize the importance of OT in their communities.
Key Takeaways
Statehouse Day advocates reflected on the experience, emphasizing the value of face-to-face engagement with legislators.
Participants reflected on the confidence they gained from stepping into the legislative process. One attendee shared, “I learned the value of directly participating in professional advocacy efforts. I realized I could articulate the crucial role of OT without feeling intimidated by the legislative process.”
Another key insight was the unexpected openness of lawmakers. As one participant noted, “The most important takeaway was feeling that, in general, the lawmakers have genuine concern and respect for their constituents.” Others echoed that sentiment, noting that while legislators are eager to help; they often welcome additional information to fully understand the scope of occupational therapy. This emphasized the importance of clear, effective communication when advocating for the profession.
“My most valuable takeaway was realizing how essential it is to clearly explain what occupational therapy is, even when the person you're speaking to says they are already familiar with it. Many people hold misconceptions about the scope and purpose of OT… By taking the time to provide a concise, meaningful explanation, we can advocate for the full breadth of our profession and ensure our role is accurately understood and appreciated.”
Others stressed the value of pairing data with personal stories to create a lasting impact. Attendees also noted that OOTA not only facilitated the event but also helped them feel equipped and empowered to engage meaningfully.
Networking, Photos, and Fun
Another highlight of the day was the lunch break, where attendees gathered to chat with Missy Anthony, Executive Director of the Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Athletic Trainers (OTPTAT) Board. Missy shared valuable insights about the work being done at the OTPTAT Board and provided perspectives on issues affecting OT and related professions. Time with her was both informative and motivating, offering attendees a broader view of the work being done on behalf of OT professionals in Ohio.
In addition to the advocacy sessions, Statehouse Day provided plenty of time for networking, mingling, and sharing experiences. Attendees had the chance to connect with others, exchange ideas, and snap a few photos to commemorate the day. The energy and enthusiasm were clear, as everyone celebrated the shared commitment to advancing the profession.

Looking Ahead
The success of Statehouse Day reinforces the importance of continued advocacy and collaboration. By working together, we can ensure that OT’s voice is heard and that the profession receives the recognition and support it deserves. As OOTA continues to grow and shape policy, events like Statehouse Day will remain a vital part of our collective advocacy efforts in Ohio. The passage of the Copay Fairness Act is a perfect example of how impactful our voices can be.
If you missed this year’s Statehouse Day, don’t worry! There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved! Keep an eye on OOTA’s communications for future advocacy events and ways to make a difference in the profession. Let’s continue standing strong and working toward a future where occupational therapy thrives and leaves a lasting impact on the lives of those we serve.
OOTA extends an extra thank you to the legislators and staff who took the time to meet with us!
