Description:

This elective centers disability justice and neurodiversity-affirming practice in occupational therapy. Participants will examine the impact of ableism and exclusionary systems, apply strengths-based and affirming frameworks, and critically evaluate policies and practices. The course emphasizes identifying opportunities to create more accessible, inclusive, and empowering care for disabled and neurodivergent clients.

Objectives:

• Analyze how systemic ableism, barriers, and past practices impact participation and outcomes for disabled and neurodivergent clients.
• Apply neuro-diversity-affirming and strength-based frameworks and practices throughout the therapeutic process to optimize client outcomes.
• Critique organizational policies, standards, and practices from a disability justice perspective to identify opportunities for more inclusive and equitable care.
• Create strategies and interventions that enhance accessibility, inclusivity, and empowerment for disabled and neurodivergent clients.

Presenter Bios:

Dr. Matthew Husband is an occupational therapist, with nine years of clinical experience, primarily in the field of pediatrics. He has worked in outpatient, home health, and school-based practice. Dr. Husband currently works as an Assistant Professor of Practice at The Ohio State University. His area of passion focuses on improving the lives of students with autism, with a particular interest in transition-related services. Dr. Husband received his Occupational Therapy Doctorate in May 2025 and his Capstone Project focused on improving employability for young adults with autism. Dr Husband supports the profession through his service within the AOTA, serving as the Representative Assembly member for Ohio.
