Clinical education presents unique challenges and the expectation for students to take an active role in their learning. This course explores how self-directed learning strategies can enhance learner engagement and autonomy. Attendees will leave with strategies for integrating QR codes into clinical education to promote active and meaningful learning. In addition, the session will provide recommendations for implementing and evaluating QR code-based learning activities in academic and clinical settings.

Objectives:

• Describe the challenges of clinical education that create a need for self-directed learning strategies.
• Explain how self-determination theory and the flipped classroom model support technology-enhanced learning.
• Identify strategies for integrating QR codes into hands-on learning environments to promote student engagement.
• Apply recommendations for implementing and evaluating QR code-based learning in clinical education settings.

Presenter bio:

Carey Minard, OTD, OTR/L began her career in occupational therapy as a certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) in 2006 after receiving her Associate of Applied Science in occupational therapy from Stark State College. She continued her education at The University of Findlay, obtaining a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy (MOT). In 2011, she was licensed and registered as an occupational therapist (OTR/L). Dr. Minard then completed her doctor of occupational therapy degree through A.T. Still University of Health Sciences in 2017. Her practice experience includes school and clinic-based pediatrics, acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, long-term care, home health, and private practice. She currently serves as the program director and is an associate professor at the University of Mount Union’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Program (candidacy status).

Dr. Minard served the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) as a member of the Approved Provider Committee, the Ohio representative to the Representative Assembly, and as the Professional Development Coordinator for the Children and Youth Special Interest Section. Currently she serves on the AOTA VLDC, the RA OTA Competency Working Group, and has rejoined the Roster of Approved Provider Reviewers (RAPR). She is a member of the AOTA and the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA). She is certified through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) and is also a Certified Children’s Vision Screener through Prevent Blindness. She also serves on Mount Union’s University Faculty Governance Board.
