This clinical education event will provide information to affect the delivery of occupational therapy for individuals with hand and wrist injuries/pathologies. Topics that will be covered during the clinical education event include: Clinical assessment of the hand and wrist; Manual palpation for anatomic structures and special testing; Patient rated outcome measures; Manual interventions including techniques for edema control, soft tissue mobilization, and scar maturation techniques; and Discussion of issues pertinent to the delivery of occupational therapy for hand and upper extremity interventions.

Objectives:

  • Describe a systematic approach for the assessment of the hand and wrist to promote functional outcomes and the delivery of occupational therapy.
  • Recognize the appropriate special testing to during clinical assessments of the hand and wrist to establish the appropriate plan of care.
  • Identify the anatomical landmarks to appropriately palpate structures during clinical assessments of the hand and wrist to establish the appropriate plan of care.
  • Identify and understand patient rated outcome measures specific to individuals with hand and wrist injury/pathology to assist with determination of rehabilitation potential.
  • Comprehend the manual intervention approaches to assist with edema control, soft tissue mobilization, and scar maturation techniques.
  • Recognize current trends and issues pertinent to the delivery of occupational therapy for hand and upper extremity interventions.
