This course will provide an overview of the different types of cancer, stages, and treatments and its impact on occupational functioning. It will also provide an overview of the management of edema, a common symptom of cancer treatment.

Objectives:

  • Describe common treatments for cancer 
  • Identify the difference between the stage and grade of cancer
  • Describe recommended occupational therapy interventions for common impairments.
  • Define lymphedema and describe its pathophysiology, including the difference between primary and secondary lymphedema.
  • Identify the risk factors and common causes of lymphedema, with a focus on its association with cancer treatments (e.g., surgery, radiation)
  • Explain the clinical signs and symptoms of lymphedema, including how to distinguish it from other conditions that may mimic it (e.g., venous insufficiency, lipedema).
  • Review assessment techniques for diagnosing lymphedema, including the use of circumferential measurements, volumetric measurements, and imaging techniques.
  • Discuss evidence-based treatment options for managing lymphedema, focusing on components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), such as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression therapy, and exercise.
  • Describe the role of occupational therapy in lymphedema and client-centered management
