Description: Prompt engineering, the deliberate construction of input text to guide AI tools such as large language models, is rapidly emerging as a skill that can improve participation for learners with diverse needs. Large language models generate human-like language but depend on clear and structured prompts to produce helpful output. In educational settings, particularly for students with disabilities such as Specific Learning Disabilities, well-designed prompts can position AI as a collaborative partner to support reading, writing, executive functioning, and engagement in learning.

Prompt engineering is more than simply asking a question. It requires critical thinking and communication skills that can be explicitly taught and supported. Rather than viewing AI as a passive tool, this approach invites learners to engage actively and reflectively with AI, promoting informed decision making and critical evaluation of AI-generated content.

This session will examine how OT can facilitate effective clint use of AI. Participants will examine key elements of strong prompts including defining user roles, clarifying task aims, specifying response formats, and setting tone. Grounded in evidence and aligned with principles of learner-centered practice, this session aims to equip attendees with actionable strategies for empowering students, particularly those with learning differences, to leverage AI meaningfully in their academic and everyday lives.

Level: Introductory. Designed for participants with little or no prior experience with AI or prompt engineering. The session establishes foundational knowledge and a conceptual framework for future application.

Objectives:

  • By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
  • Describe how prompt engineering improves access to academic content for students with diverse learning needs.
  • Identify strategies for teaching students to craft effective prompts that align with their learning goals and needs.
