Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice, Accessibility & Belonging at OOTA
Our Commitment to All
The Ohio Occupational Therapy Association is dedicated to supporting all professionals seeking to serve those who need occupational therapy, while ensuring access to occupational therapy for all persons. We believe that as an inclusive profession, occupational therapy maximizes health, well-being, and quality of life for people, populations, and communities through effective solutions that facilitate participation in everyday living.
Advancing Justice Through Practice
Many individuals from marginalized communities experience occupational injustice, which directly impacts their health and occupational performance. As occupational therapy professionals, our goal is to support meaningful life participation and holistic wellness for everyone. To truly meet the needs of all occupational therapy consumers, we must possess both the knowledge to address unique client needs and the confidence to advocate for meaningful change.
Cultural Humility Over Competency
OOTA embraces Cultural Humility as our guiding framework—moving beyond the traditional concept of cultural competence. While cultural competence suggests an endpoint to learning and focuses on cultural differences, Cultural Humility recognizes that:
- Learning is continuous and never complete
- Acknowledging bias and gaps in practice is essential
- Power dynamics impact both patients and providers
- Mistakes and growth are part of the journey toward positive change
This approach emphasizes addressing prejudices and power imbalances rather than simply cataloging cultural differences.
Our Action-Oriented Approach
OOTA provides occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, students, and educators with practical tools to become advocates for both the profession and clients from marginalized communities. We incorporate DEIJAB principles into all our work and activities, ensuring that our continuing education, support, resources, and advocacy efforts reflect our commitment to equity and inclusion.
Evidence-Based Advocacy
Through our dedication to evidence-based practice and systematic advocacy, we work to eliminate barriers that prevent full participation in everyday living. Our approach combines professional excellence with social justice, recognizing that true occupational therapy practice must address both individual needs and systemic inequities.
