The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is offering a FREE training opportunity to become a Stepping On (SO) Facilitator in Ohio. This training will occur virtually and be implemented by two SO Master Trainers (MTs), both of which are certified through the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging (WIHA).

The training will be conducted virtually for three days April 15-17, 2026, in addition to a two-hour post-training fidelity (adherence) observation session. Upon completion of the entire training and certification process, individuals will be approved for both in-person and virtual program delivery.

SO is an evidence-based fall prevention program, which is facilitated in a small group setting, within a community-based location, and as a seven-session (two hours per session) series. The program is grounded in behavior change, preventative framework, and principles of adult education, with a focus on four critical domains:

  1. Balance and strength exercises
  2. Medication review
  3. Vision review
  4. Home modifications

WIHA serves as the national license holder for the SO program, whereas the ODH functions as the statewide license holder for Ohio.

ODH is offering this free SO Facilitator training in an effort to expand statewide balance and mobility programming, while prioritizing counties that had an average age-adjusted rate of unintentional fall death amount adults 60 years and older from 2020-2023 above the state rate, and have either a high social vulnerability index score and/or low uptake of Stepping On in their community in 2024 reported to ODH.

All individuals are encouraged to apply for the SO Facilitator training, with special consideration will be given to applicants that plan to serve one (1) or more of the following counties.

Allen – Athens – Champaign – Clark – Defiance – Huron – Lake – Licking – Lucas – Medina – Fairfield – Fayette – Franklin – Henry – Hocking – Montgomery – Perry – Paulding – Ross – Wyandot

Adult Vision Screening and Healthy Eyes

Presented by Prevent Blindness Ohio

Half of all blindness can be prevented through early detection and treatment. Today, there are 3.8 million Ohioans affected by vision problems, which if not detected and treated early, could lead to blindness. Because of the growth in the aging population, there will be more Ohioans affected by vision robbing conditions. The impact of vision loss on the individual, his or her family, and Ohio is a significant public health concern.

Adult Vision Screening Training Program, you will be able to:
• Perform adult vision health risk assessments and near and distance visual acuity screenings
• Educate people about “aging eye” diseases and disorders
• Describe Adult Vision Screening Guidelines Published by Prevent Blindness
Upon successful completion of the training and a practical assessment, you will be nationally certified to provide adult vision screenings for three years and may be eligible to receive vision screening equipment including: Adult Risk Assessment and Registration Forms, charts, and assorted educational vision resources and brochures.

HealthyEyes Program enhances the services of Ohio’s health-care volunteers, senior care staff, and public health networks by providing access to prevention, referral, and treatment resources for adult eye challenges. After completing the HealthyEyes portion of the program, you will be able to provide facts and information to help prevent vision loss.
The Adult Vision Screening portion of the program provides education on how to properly administer vision screenings for adults. This training provides participants with the opportunity to be an advocate for eye health and safety!
