Addressing Sexuality in Occupational Therapy

Where:  Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Boardrood

The purpose of this presentation is to educate and advocate for the importance of sexuality for each individual regardless of disability. It will provide an overview on the role that occupational therapists can and should play regarding sexuality, resulting in an individual’s overall increased quality of life, independence and performance in this client centered area. It will provide guidelines and examples on addressing this topic and treatment ideas moving forward into intervention.

  • Recognize the importance of sexuality to individuals with disability as it relates to quality of life.
  • Increase confidence as a clinician to initiate conversation concerning sexuality.
  • Identify and implement guidelines following the PLISSIT and Intentional Relationship Model to create structure within the intervention process.
  • Recognzie the importance that OT plays in the realm of sexuality regarding its effectiveness and outcomes.
